1991 brachte der weltgrösste Produzent von Filmmaterial die erste Digitalkamera auf den Markt und nicht, wie vielfach vermutet, ein japanischer Kamerahersteller oder Elektronikgigant. Eastman Kodak quälte sich aus einem einfachen Grund jahrelang mit der Einführung der digitalen Fotografie: seine Haupteinnahmequelle war fotografischer Film, ein Verbrauchsmaterial, das ständig nachgekauft werden musste. 1989, als Kodak das erste Stipendium an einen Studenten der Fotografie vergab, war Lucien Samaha zur richtigen Zeit am richtigen Ort. Er wurde an Kodaks Marketing-Schulungszentrum in Henrietta, N.Y. als Bildungskoordinator berufen, um Kunden und auch Angestellten des Konzerns die Grundbegriffe der Fotografie und der fotografischen Prozesse nahezubringen. Da er bereits die aufkommende Kunstform des digitalen Bildes am Rochester Institute of Technologystudiert und praktiziert hatte, wurde er als Kamera-Tester, Forscher und Pädagoge zur Teilnahme an der groß angelegten internationalen Marketingkampagne für Kodaks Professional DCS angeheuert, der weltweit ersten kommerziellen Digitalkamera. Seine Aufgaben brachten ihn bis nach Australien und Japan. Als leidenschaftlicher und überaus produktiver Fotograf nutzte Lucien Samaha seinen Zugang zu professionellstem Equipment und Material jener Zeit, um die Anfänge der digitalen Fotografie zu dokumentieren und das digitale Bild aus dem Umfeld von Forschung und Entwicklung in die reale Welt zu bringen.
